Many of the children that are helped by Operation Smile are lucky enough to receive attention before they are old enough to fully understand their situation or suffer the consequences visited upon them the cruelty of other children and adults, but sometimes children have to grow to adults and spend a lifetime feeling ashamed and different. Joh Sin Oo will not have to spend the rest of his life with a cleft, but the first 12 years have certainly taken a toll. As a small prathom 2 child he was bullied and teased so much that he could no longer bear the pain of school, and his parents made the difficult choice to save his heart at the price of his education and kept him at home. He missed the coming years of play and happiness and friendship. These long years of isolation finally ended with a long trip to Mae Sot where he received his life changing surgery from Operation Smile. He is so thankful for the medical team that helped him, and he can’t wait to go back to school and start his life again.
