Suppachai 'Deaw' Korsantia
Deaw is an 11 year-old boy with wonderful dreams. When he grows up, he wants to give financial support to his family, so his mom and dad never have to work so hard again. To be able to support the family, Deaw’s father went to Taiwan to work as a laborer in a bicycle factory, while Deaw and his mother live in Srisaket province and she takes care of him.
Born with an open palate and small eye syndrome in his right eye, Deaw needed surgery to help him speak and eat properly. Unfortunately, Daew was born in a rural town that did not a have a pediatric surgeon at the hospital so his deformities would go untreated but not un-taunted for all of his young life. The teasing and looking different made his childhood life miserable. At school, Deaw was taunted and teased time after time yet his reaction was to do nothing, but when he would get home to his mother he would cry his broken little heart out.
Deaw loves singing and he’s passionate about music. The ‘Khene ‘ (a bamboo mouth organ played primarily in northeast Thailand) is his favorite musical instrument but was also one of the instruments he could not play. He struggled with blowing the air through his mouth. Because he had a cleft palate, it was impossible for him to build up air pressure in the mouth because the air escapes out of the nose. After a long obsession and trying, he found that he could blow some air into the musical piece if he closed one of his nostrils - only a tiny whistle came out, but it made Deaw happy.
When Operation Smile Thailand organized the medical mission in Ubon Ratchathani, Deaw and family travelled 2 hours journey from home with the public bus to the to the hospital site for the main screening. The medical volunteers learned that no one in his family was born with any cleft deformity before. Deaw’s cleft palate is genuinely heartbreaking for his mother who just wants to see her boy smile and have fun like other children. When he accepted to the surgical mission it lit up her hopes and she believed that the OST medical team could help her son.
Deaw is a kindhearted boy with a dream to become a policeman. He said that after he recovers from the surgery and practices hard to learn to speak properly he will grow up and go to work so his parents will not have to be apart and work so hard anymore. He will take care of them.
Operation Smile’s medical mission in Ubon Ratchathani gave him new a life that will lead him to a better future. We surely believe that one day in the future, there will be a Srisaket born and bred policeman who has an exceptional skill in playing perfect Khene music.
